Leadership Oak Ridge Class of 2012 Leaving Their Mark at the Boys & Girls Club of the Clinch Valley
Annually a group of nearly 30 current and emerging leaders in the Oak Ridge community are accepted into the Leadership Oak Ridge (LOR) program, facilitated by the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce. The 10-month program gathers participants monthly to develop their leadership skills while empowering them to identify and implement solutions to the most pressing community issues. Each year's class is charged with identifying, funding and implementing a class community project. "The class projects are ambitious and designed to promote team building experiences. We are so proud of the positive changes we see happening in Oak Ridge at the hands of our more than 1,000 Leadership Oak Ridge alumni," said Greta Ownby, program facilitator.
The Leadership class of 2012 has chosen to completely renovate, furnish and decorate a multi-purpose room at the Boys & Girls Club of the Clinch Valley. "We serve 1100 children annually in this more than 50 year old facility. We have a teen center, game room, gymnasium and homework area. Having this space available with tables and seating will offer us so many new opportunities, including an area to serve our evening meals," said Donyell "DJ" Jones, Chief Professional Officer for the club.
The LOR class of 2012 raised $4,975 to complete the renovation. "Once we had a good look at the room it quickly became evident that it would need more than paint and tables to be the kind of space these kids deserve," said Renee McGhee, project coordinator. Tom Martin generously offered his general contracting services and Greg Palmer, owner of Tennessee Tool & Engineering (B&GC board member and alumni) generously donated all materials. Electrical work was donated by Neal Derryberry. Teams of classmates met after hours during the week and on Saturdays for 8 weeks to replace and install drywall, beadboard, ceiling track and tiles, electric wiring, flooring, shelving, paint and a custom painted mural. New tables and chairs were ordered assembled and installed to complete the multipurpose space. The budget was so carefully spent that surplus funds were able to be donated to the club for future projects and improvements.
Members of the LOR class of 2012 will reveal the new space and celebrate with the children at the club on November 8th at 4:00 pm. Leadership Oak Ridge class of 2012 would like to thank their project corporate sponsors: ORNL Federal Credit Union, 3 Minute Magic Carwash, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, Y-12 Federal Credit Union, Enrichment Federal Credit Union and UT Battelle.
