Leadership Oak Ridge Class Announces Project

Ethics in Business - What is it?

In keeping with the tradition of Leadership Oak Ridge, the 2009 class has developed a class project that will lay the ground work for a multi-year impact for Oak Ridge High School students.

The initial part of the project is the offering of "Ethics in Business" a program for high school Sophomores. Set for Saturday, September 19 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., registration for the session is now open.

According to Bob Milazzo of Tetra Tech and a member of the Leadership Oak Ridge project committee, "Students will learn that ethics are the rules you live by in your personal and business life."

This program strives to educate using four written dilemmas, power-point presentations and role-playing. While facilitators guide students through the thought process they do not teach, lecture or arbitrate. The function of the facilitator is to listen and support the students as they discuss the issues presented to them. Each student group must decide among themselves what they consider to be ethical.

The program is patterned after a long running program in Southern California. The Oak Ridge program is being conducted by the Leadership Oak Ridge class, with financial support provided by Hazelwood, Y-12 Federal Credit Union, Tetra Tech, WSI and ORAU.

During the September session, students will learn to identify their own set of ethics and the strength of their personal ethics. They will also discuss the differences and commonalities of unethical and illegal actions.

The second part of the multi-year program is the development, guidance and support for a Youth Leadership program in Oak Ridge. More details will be available about this initiative in the coming months.
